Best of 2008

Best Songs of 2008

1. MIA: Paper Planes. An inspired song for the third world democracy with the brilliant use of a random Clash song.
2. Fleet Foxes: Ragged Wood. This song contains four different fragments of a song, with each transporting the listener to a higher level of placidity.
3. Coldplay: 42. Coldplay's mini-suite is propelled by Chris Martin's ability to create a beautiful melodic song.
4. Madonna: Incredible. Pure shallowness. Pure brilliance. It contains the best ending to a pop song since Michael Jackson's Wanna Get Something Started.
5. Santogold: Creator. With her intergalactic wailing, Santogold scares the shit out of everyone who doubts her or stands in her way.
6. LCD Soundsystem: Big Ideas. James Murphy presents a simple stem of a song and continues to build on it until you are left with a frenetic fusion of dance and punk at the end.
7. Kings of Leon: Sex on Fire. Stylistically, there is nothing groundbreaking about this song. However, the singing and the melodies are fantastic.
8. Cat Power: New York. This is how you cover a song. You could hear the disdain she feels for this city.
9. Kanye West: Coldest Winter. Kanye's love letter to his deceased mother is truly heartbreaking, especially when he chants, "Goodbye my friend!"
10. Panic at the Disco: Nine in the Afternoon. The band do The Beatles proud in this song, particularly because it's loaded with great hooks.

Best of 2008

Best Albums of 2008

1. Girl Talk: Feed the Animals.
Technically, this is not music from 2008. Instead, it is an assortment of old pop, rock, dance, hip-hop, rap, and country songs fused together, birthing the most exciting music of the year. What producer Greg Grillis created here is simply astounding, seamlessly combining an amalgamation of genres in the span of seconds. For instance, one song includes samples by Kanye West, Radiohead, and The Band. Surprisingly, it works.

2. TV on the Radio: Dear Science.
There are many qualities that set this album above most of the indie albums. There is the experimental music, which enlightens but does not frustrate or annoy. Above all, though, there are the lyrics, which melds together the spiritual sense that permeates the album.

3. Fleet Foxes: Fleet Foxes.
An album for the green generation. Rustic and melancholic in sound, one is transposed into a sunny trip in the woods immediately upon hearing the Beach Boysesque harmonies.

4. Kings of Leon: Only By the Night.
This band continues to grow, creating the most melodic rock music. Each of the songs has a catchy hook that will stay with you for a while.

5. Coldplay: Viva la Vida.
After their X & Y disappointment, I was not particularly excited about this album. With Brian Eno as producer, the album is fused well together, segueing the entire thing with the now-trademark Coldplay elegiac sound.

6. My Morning Jacket: Evil Urges.
Nerdy and dorky. The best description I could come up with to describe this eclectic album by My Morning Jacket.

7. Kanye West: 808s and Heartbreak.
I applaud Kanye for not ignoring his year of heart ache and continuing to do his party music. I also commend Kanye for experimenting with his music on this album. So what about the music in the album? It captures his harrowing experiences of the last year.

8. Beck: Modern Guilt.
With the aid of Danger Mouse Beck explored the ailments of our decaying planet. Sounds pretty morose, except it is not thanks to Danger Mouse jumping beats.

9. Cat Power: Jukebox.
Her New York rendition alone makes this one of my favorite albums of 08. She transforms the other songs in the album in a similar remarkable fashion.

10. Madonna: Hardcandy.
The last half of the album is not very good. However, the first half of this album is fantastic. In fact, I would say that it is as good a music as Madonna has ever made.
In case anyone has wondered what an unemployed, balding, pear-shaped Mexican is thinking, wonder no more...
